Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin issued the following statement via his social media platforms shortly after learning Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed Alabama State Senate Bill 119 into law.
His office also issued the following written statement this afternoon:
“Dear switch boys,
Governor Ivey signed a law today that makes possessing a Glock switch illegal. Simple possession satisfies law and you can receive up to 10 years in prison.
Law enforcement up one and BPD is outside ready to put case on all of y’all.
We are also partnering with Crime Stoppers for community members to call in and remain anonymous. If your call leads to a credible arrest for someone who possesses a Glock switch, you will receive $1,000.
Call Crime Stoppers at 2052547777.
Help us get these switch boys off our streets.
Y’all were hell in 2024. We putting serious heat on yall in 2025.”— Randall Woodfin, Mayor of Birmingham, Ala., regarding the passage of the Glock Switch ban law
As reported by Alabama Reflector and other outlets, the law went into effect immediately thanks to an amendment offered by the Alabama State House of Representatives.
This also occurred hours before a scheduled public meeting at the Birmingham Crossplex Wednesday afternoon to share and collect more community input about the crime commission report on violence in Birmingham delivered in early January and begin developing a community-driven plan to reduce violence.
