Severe Weather Expected Monday Morning, Area Schools Announce Plans

Metro Birmingham, Jefferson County and all of Central Alabama are at risk for severe thunderstorms late Sunday night through Monday afternoon. According to the statement from the National Weather Service Birmingham, “all severe weather hazards will be possible: tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail.” They ask “that you have multiple, reliable ways to receive weather warnings and have your safe place designated before storms affect your area.”
Birmingham and Jefferson County both sit in an area of enhanced risk (level 3 out of 5) as of the 5:22 p.m. update from NWS BMX.

- The city of Birmingham has announced it will delay opening its offices until 10 a.m., except for police, fire and 911.
- All Jefferson County Department of Health locations will delay opening until 10 a.m.
- Birmingham City Schools announced Sunday evening that March 31 would be an e-learning day, with all district offices closed and staff working remotely.
- Jefferson County Schools announced a two-hour delay for Monday. According to the statement posted to their social media profiles, buses will run 2 hours later than normal and breakfast will not be served at school (though lunch will be provided) and no before-school care. The statement asks employees to check their email for information concerning their report time.
- Advent Episcopal School will operate on a two-hour delay.
- The Altamont School has announced that Monday will be an e-learning day.
- Banks Academy has announced that Monday will be an e-learning day.
- Bessemer City Schools will operate on a two-hour delay.
- All three campuses of Cornerstone Schools of Alabama will be closed on Monday.
- Empower Community School will be closed
- Fairfield City Schools declared Monday an e-learning day with all buildings closed.
- Jefferson State Community College will operate on a two-hour delay.
- John Carroll High School announced Sunday night that first period will start at 11 a.m. on Monday.
- Tarrant City Schools will operate on a three-hour delay.
- Trussville City Schools are delayed two hours, with buses also operating on a two-hour delay.
- All United Ability programs will open at 11 a.m.
