The Birmingham City Council on Tuesday approved a $1.9 million agreement for police body cameras that includes a new feature that automatically activates the devices when officers unholster their Tasers.
“We’ve updated our master agreement with this vendor that we’ve utilized for years because we want to be sure all our equipment is up to date and continues to communicate with all the firmware our police department utilizes,” Councilor Hunter Williams said. “We want our officers to have every piece of equipment they need, especially as it relates to body cameras. This allows law enforcement to see body camera footage in real time in a critical situation.”
The agreement is with Scottsdale, Arizona-based Axon Enterprises, formerly known as Taser International. According to an Axon release, the company’s full-year revenue outlook ranges from $2.6 billion to $2.7 billion.
According to a policy listed on the city’s Public Safety Advisory Committee website, Birmingham police officers currently activate their body cameras “when responding to calls for service and during law enforcement-related encounters and activities, such as traffic stops, arrests, searches, interviews and pursuits.”
The policy advises that, “Whenever an officer is in doubt, a recording should be made.”
The policy also states that officers may turn their devices off when either they or their suspect has left the scene, or “in an arrest situation where the defendant is secured and handcuffed in the backseat of the patrol unit.”
In other business, the council approved an agreement in which the Jefferson County Greenways Commission will provide maintenance services for the Shades Creek Greenway and Clairmont Avenue Walking Trail for three years. The city will pay $130,000 to the commission for the services.
