Incumbents Sherman Collins Jr., Derek Billups and Leticia W. Harvill are headed back to the Birmingham City Board of Education after being reelected Tuesday night, but it appears runoffs will be needed to settle the winners in three of the seats.
Candidates in Districts 2, 8 and 9 did not receive the 50% plus 1 vote needed to win those races outright. Runoffs will be held Oct. 7.
With three board members running unopposed for reelection, six incumbents will be turning to the nine-member board after the elections.
District 1
Incumbent Sherman Collins Jr. is headed to another term on the board. With seven of eight precincts counted, he had won 67.84% of the vote in Tuesday’s election.
Challenger Pattie Reasor got 27.68% of the vote, with the remaining 4.48% of votes in the race going to Walter Umrani.
District 2
Challenger Terri Michal appears headed to a runoff with board incumbent Neonta Williams. Michal had 48.04% of the vote Tuesday night. Williams was in second with 26.20% but led the third candidate, Anthony Jones, by just 11 votes. That’s with 14 of 15 precincts counted.
District 3
Incumbent Mary Boehm was unopposed for reelection.
District 4
Incumbent board member Derrick Billups also is headed to another term on the board. He captured 57.68% of the vote to challenger Rodney Huntley’s 42.32%.
District 5
Incumbent James Sullivan was unopposed in his bid for reelection.
District 6
Incumbent board member Leticia W. Harvill easily won reelection, taking 69.58% of votes to Yancey Williams Sr.’s 30.42%
District 7
Incumbent Walter Wilson ran unopposed for reelection.
District 8
It appears Antwon Womack and Pam Bass will be headed to a runoff for the board seat being vacated by Sonja Smith.
With 12 of 13 precincts reporting and just 45 votes separating them, Womack had 44.85% of the votes to Bass’ 43.79%. Challenger Sybil Y. Washington took 11.36% of the vote.
District 9
Yamika Foy and Eric Hall are headed to a runoff to determine which will take the seat on the board being vacated by outgoing Chairman Jason Meadows. Foy got 38.98% of votes cast in the race and Hall got 35.53%.
Candidate Olivia T. McGaha took 16.71% of the votes cast, and Brandon “Brad” Parnell received 8.78% of the votes.
