DEVELOPING — State Rep. John Rogers, D-Birmingham, has agreed to resign his office and plead guilty to charges in connection with a scheme to defraud a Jefferson County fund intended to provide for school construction, school boards and public projects.

He is accused of funneling $400,000 from the fund to the Piper Davis Youth Baseball League, which is accused of then sending $200,000 back to Rogers and his assistant, Varrie Johnson Kindall, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Former Rep. Fred Plump, D-Fairfield, was executive director of the league at the time.

Plump resigned from the House of Representatives and pleaded guilty to conspiracy and obstruction of justice charges in June 2023. Kindall, whom the statement called Rogers’ “former assistant and companion,” pleaded guilty in February to conspiring with Rogers and Plump to defraud the fund.

Rogers, 82, is the longest-serving state representative in the Alabama House of Representatives.
