Party Nominations to Be Settled in Tuesday Runoffs

Voters return to the polls Tuesday to settle contests for party nominations to several offices that were unsettled in the May 19 primaries because no candidate received a majority of votes.
Nominations to two local offices in Jefferson County are yet to be decided – for assistant tax collector in the Bessemer Division and representative for the Alabama House District 52 seat, both on the Democratic primary. One statewide race, for U.S. Senate, is on the Democratic ballot.
Five statewide races are on the Republican ballot for the runoffs, for U.S. Senate, lieutenant governor, attorney general, commissioner of agriculture and industries and Public Service Commission Place 2.
Not on the ballots are the races for nomination to congressional seats, which have been the subject of court action and are set for primary elections on Aug. 11.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday across the region. Residents who voted in one party’s primary on May 19 may vote only in the same party’s runoff. Crossover voting is not allowed in Alabama.
